Get rid of mould from your home

Equip yourself with facts and tools to combat black mould on walls and around your home.

Mould is unsightly and can lead to allergic reactions. But whether you have mould on walls in your bedroom, around your windows, your bath, or your sink, removing it is easy with Domestos Multi-Purpose Spray. Find out how below.

What is mould?

What is black mould?

Black mould is a fungus that can build up on surfaces wherever you have excessive moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, but it can also appear on bedroom walls and virtually anywhere in your household – wherever you might have high levels of humidity and condensation. Mould is a very common problem, with studies finding that around 62% of homes contain Cladosporium moulds which are often dark brown or black, while around 41% of homes contain penicillium moulds which can appear in shades of blue or green.

What is white mould?

White mould is not a specific type of mould, but some species of mould may appear white at various stages of their development. Species commonly found in homes include aspergillus, Cladosporium, and penicillium – all of these moulds can appear grey, green, or black as well as white. Moreover, all moulds thrive in moist areas where a food source like wood is present.

Some moulds may appear white in their early stages of development and change colour after they produce spores. Others may appear white whatever age they are as their spores aren’t pigmented. White mould can appear powdery and sometimes it’s not easy to recognise it as mould.

Is mould dangerous?

According to the NHS website, mould can be dangerous to vulnerable people in certain circumstances. Inhaling or touching mould spores can lead to allergic reactions such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, or skin rash. Mould can also cause asthma attacks. People with existing skin or respiratory issues, as well as babies and elderly people, should be particularly careful about exposure to mould.

Removing mould

What causes mould?

Mould and damp are generally caused by excess moisture, meaning black mould in bathrooms is all too familiar! Leaking pipes are a common culprit and so is rising damp in basements or ground floor rooms. Leaking roofs and insufficient insulation around windows can also lead to dampness and therefore mould.

Removing black mould on walls and around windows

Bleach products from Domestos are highly effective against mould of all types, including cleaning mould off walls, mould around windows and removing mildew in the home, killing 99.99% of germs, bacteria, and viruses dead.

Domestos Bleach Multi-Purpose Cleaner Spray is one of the best and easiest ways to deal with unsightly mould and mildew. This powerful disinfectant spray leaves your surfaces brilliantly and hygienically clean and is suitable for food preparation areas and most hard surfaces in the house.

  • No need to dilute it – just point it at the affected area and squirt generously.

  • For disinfection leave for 2 minutes and wipe away thoroughly.

  • For tough stains, leave for a minute before wiping away. (follow the directions on the bottle)

  • Wipe the surface clean with a cloth.

  • Make sure you wash the cloth afterwards to prevent mould spreading.

How to prevent mould

As with most things in life, prevention is better than cure. Mould tends to build up where there’s little ventilation, so open doors and windows where possible after cooking, showering, or bathing and always use a ventilator fan if you have one. Also, try to dry clothes outdoors – if that’s not possible, you can try alternating the rooms you use to dry clothes. If mould keeps coming back, you could consider a dehumidifier.
