Everyone loves a gleaming bathroom but stubborn limescale stains can ruin your best efforts. The build-up of unsightly mineral deposits left by hard water, otherwise known as limescale, is a common bathroom blight.
The majority of UK homes have some form of limescale, but those in the South, East Anglia and North East tend to be the worst affected. The build-up leaves dreadful stains on the toilet bowl that no amount of scrubbing with normal cleaning products seems to eradicate.
As well as being unsightly, the structure of the limescale provides the ideal breeding ground for germs and worse still, it attracts human waste, allowing germs that can cause illness to live for longer periods and in greater numbers than in limescale-free loos. This is why Domestos has created Zero Limescale Toilet Limescale Remover, which obliterates mineral deposits and wipes out germs in your loo.
To find out how limescale could be affecting your loo, click your local area on the map below:
You live in an area where water is hard, so your home is among those worst hit by mineral deposits in the toilet. The honeycomb structure of the solid scale allows germs to breed and thrive, sheltering them from other cleaning products.
Use Domestos Zero Limescale once or twice a week to remove all limescale from your loo and keep on top of build-up.
You live in an area where water is medium - neither hard nor soft. Although your household is not the worst affected, you still have to battle mineral deposits in your loo to keep it sparkling and if not removed regularly limescale builds up gradually both above and below the waterline.
Used once a week Domestos Zero Limescale will prevent any build-up in your loo.
You live in an area where water is soft and unlike most UK homes, you don't have an uphill struggle against limescale. However, even in soft water areas, limescale can build-up slowly. So it's important to make sure that you regularly clean your loo of any mineral deposit that may form to keep it as shiny as the rest of your home.
Use Domestos Zero Limescale once a fortnight to prevent hard deposits forming in your loo.
Domestos Zero Limescale Toilet Limescale Remover is up to three times thicker than other toilet limescale removers. Unlike many other products, it grips below the waterline, destroying limescale and the germs that live in it. For best results, cover the entire toilet bowl with about 70ml of neat product. Leave it for thirty minutes, then brush if required. Reapply to get rid of tough stains.
Domestos Zero Limescale Toilet Limescale Remover has a RRP of £1.99 for a 750ml bottle. It is only suitable for use in the loo.
Use disinfectants safely. Always read the label and product information before use.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CLEANING PRODUCTS SHOULD NOT BE MIXED. DO NOT USE ANY BLEACH AT THE SAME TIME AS DOMESTOS ZERO LIMESCALE. ENSURE ANY BLEACH IN THE BOWL IS COMPLETELY FLUSHED AWAY BEFORE USING DOMESTOS ZERO LIMESCALE AND VICE VERSA.
1. What does limescale look like? How do I know if I have limescale in my toilet?
Limescale typically forms underneath the rim and under the waterline of the toilet. Pure limescale is white but it can become yellow when stained with urine deposits or browny / green as it becomes stained with bacteria, faeces and rust.
2. How does limescale form?
Limescale is a problem that is usually worse in hard water areas. Salts (Magnesium, Phosphate and Calcium) from the water deposit on the toilet surface together with urine molecules. Some bacteria can break down the urine molecules and layers of salt, urine and germs (bacteria) start to form in a lattice like structure - this is limescale.
3. What is the connection between limescale and germs?
Bacteria can help the formation of limescale (see 2 above). They are also protected by the limescale. The limescale can increase the surface area and roughness for the bacteria to stick to better - up to 37% more than on a clean surface! Bacteria can produce slimes that colour the limescale green or brown.
4. Where do I need to apply the product?
We recommend that the entire surface above the waterline is covered. Product should be applied liberally to ensure that the product gets into contact with all of the limescale even below the waterline.
5. Can Domestos Zero Limescale be used outside of the toilet?
Domestos Zero Limescale Remover has been specifically designed for the toilet therefore we do not recommend it to be used for other surfaces.
6. How often do I need to apply the product to keep limescale at bay?
Our laboratories have shown that under the waterline, one application of Domestos Zero Limescale can eliminate over 10 days of limescale build-up in extreme conditions (ie very hard water areas). Domestos Zero Limescale can eliminate as much as 40 weeks of limescale above the waterline! Limescale formation will differ depending on your particular water hardness and toilet design and use. A weekly dose of the product is reasonable in most cases.
In order to germs at bay between treatments we recommend the use of Domestos Thick Bleach / Domestos 5x.
